Indoor Tomato Plants: How To Care For Your Indoor Tomato Plant

How To Care For An Indoor Tomato Plant

Indoor tomato plants are pretty hardy. They really don’t require a whole lot of special care, but there are a few important factors.

First, use an ample sized container to allow for root spreading and growth. We recommend at least a ten gallon sized planter. A good rule of thumb is to use a container that is as tall as the plant at maturity. This will allow the roots to spread out and flourish.

Normal garden soil from your local gardening center is just fine. Once the plant is established, about a month or so, you can use a tomato plant fertilizer if you wish. We normally don’t find it necessary, but it is up to you.

As for watering, keep the soil on the dry side of moist. Since indoor environments tend to be drier and less humid than outdoors, it may be necessary to water a bit more frequently. Usually, twice a week is plenty, but you will need to monitor the soil and adjust accordingly.

The most important factor is sunlight. Just like an outdoor tomato plant, this variety needs sufficient sunlight to thrive. Try placing the plant in a southern or western exposure window to make sure it gets about six hours of sunlight per day.

If the plant isn’t getting enough sun exposure, you will notice a lack of growth and yellowing leaves. You can augment natural sunlight with an indoor growing light if need be.

Summary

You can enjoy fresh tomatoes all year around with new varieties of indoor tomato plants. These inexpensive, hardy plants will adapt to just about any indoor environment. They are easy to care for, with adequate sunlight and consistent watering being the most important factors.

Your plant will yield a several pound crop of tomatoes when established, usually after a few months. Enjoy!
